The Miguel de Cervantes School, from Gijón, Finland’s Liikkuva Kaljoki and Poland’s Municipal Kindergarten Nº34 were the three finalists at the BeActive Awards given by the European Commission amongst all the Schools in Europe for its sports and healthy habits promotion. The Asturian students take the helm from Ireland’s St. Clare’s Primary School and received on October 11th the trophy and 5,000 Euros in Marseille.
The “Cervantes, isla de los deportes” programme was launched by the school because they considered that two hours of exercise per week were not enough to follow the European Union’s directive regarding exercise.

The bike-riding and the Cervantes Mile Duathlon were the culmination for those students who had not yet joined the other 80% who were already doing extracurricular activities, went to school by bike and had managed to reduce obesity. A part of the award’s 5,000 Euros will be used to buy a defibrillator and host the desired White Week.
