Puerto Vallarta is named after Ignacio Vallarta, a former governor from Jalisco. It was founded in 1706 by Spanish colonists and still keeps some aspects of the Spanish cultural and historical heritage.
Its landscapes are quite remarkable, the jungle, the river, the waterfalls and Mismaloya Beach, which became world-famous after John Houston shot the Night of the Iguana there. Los Arcos, impressive rocks emerging from the bay; the Municipal Palace, and the Malecón, decorated with romantic bronze sculptures are some interesting sights in the city.
