Acknowledgements and Prizes

The City and the City Council have received several prizes and acknowledgements for their activity and projects developed these last years. There are some that stand out: the Municipal Transparency 2010, awarded by the NGO Transparency International Spain, the City of Science and Innovation badge, an acknowledgement issued by the Ministry of Science and Innovation in recognition of the compromise and effort of the municipal government towards R&D in the city. Likewise, the City has been awarded with the “Q” of Tourist Quality in all the beaches present in the municipality. In June 2010 the Mayoress received a European diploma at Strasbourg which confirms our compromise with Europe and the defence of values that make a democratic society.

Municipal Transparency Award

The global non-governmental organization Transparency International makes an annual index that measures the level of transparency before the citizens and the society of the Spanish City Councils. In 2008 and 2009 Gijón obtained a second place in the classification, achieving a first place in 2010. The award ceremony took place in Madrid, at the Fundación Ortega y Gasset-Gregorio Marañón, the headquarters for Transparency International Spain.

Gijón: City of Science and Innovation

Gijón has become one of the ten Spanish cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants that have been awarded the “City of Science and Innovation” by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, which recognizes the effort and compromise invested in R&D and its contribution, from a local sphere, to the production model.

The “Q” of Tourist Quality for all the urban beaches

Gijón hasreceived this demanding certification given by the Spanish Institute for Tourist Quality, which recognizes the quality standards of Spanish beaches.Thus, we become one of the few cities in Spain with three certified beaches andthe only one in the Cantabric area, marking our city as an important point fortourist quality. The Q Tourist Quality normative for beaches offers a quality system oriented towards tourist enjoyment taking into account environmental values and system sustainability.

Award for the Casa Malva

The inauguration of the Centro de Atención Integral a Mujeres Víctimas de la Violencia de Género, known as Casa Malva, a centre that helps women that have suffered gender-based violence, received an award by the Ministry of Health, Social Policies and Equality, whose ceremony took place in the Queen Sofia Museum.
